Major Hamlet test. If you missed it, tomorrow morning is a great time to make it up; be here no later than 8:40. I will also allow make-ups Wednesday and Thursday after school. That's it--none on Friday.
Forgot to tell 6th period in the rush to get started before the baseball players left--it's OK if this is longer than the four pages stated on the hand-out. If you need more substance to make a clear case, and you feel that you are not "spinning your wheels" with repetition, go for it. Five pages ought to about do it, though. (So if you were in 4th and did not hear my remarks on this subject, now you too are in the loop.)
FOR TOMORROW
Essay first draft is due. I put the MLA first page on the overhead--if you were absent, you should still know the drill (the first page has not changed since you were in 9th grade, or earlier, for that matter). Remember:
- running header 1/2 inch down (Last name 1)
- Heading on the left side, DOUBLE-spaced: Your Name, My Name, Course, Date
- Title, centered, regular 12-point font
Although Hamlet's exact meaning may be controversial, Ophelia surely feels that he has betrayed their love when he exclaims, "Get thee to a nunnery" (3.1.131).
Notice two things: 1) final punctuation goes AFTER the parenthetical citation, and 2) there MUST be a lead-in (which can actually follow a quote as well). One way or another, the quotation must be "embedded" or "integrated" into your own text. NO NAKED QUOTES!
If you have been out of class and did not see yesterday's post, please read it so that you will get the link for an important hand-out detailing other information.
