Combo Post: Thursday and Friday

IN CLASS ON THURSDAY
Students read a history selection by someone known as "The Venerable Bede" (74-78 in the text) and answered questions #1-5 (ink, complete sentences).  If you were absent on Thursday, make sure to have this done for Monday.

It took two-thirds of the period to go over it in class.  If you were absent, you will need to read it carefully and absorb it on your own.  And if you were present in class, you should still read the rest of this post to make sure that your understanding of upcoming expectations is accurate.
  • First side--review of how to embed quotes, using some examples from the Beowulf text (both your book and the hand-outs from the complete text).  All info and every detail of the examples are important.  Read and heed.
  • Second side, top--this is homework due on Monday (people had 15-20 minutes to work in class; most got one "chunk" completed).  It is based on the earlier "three traits" homework for Beowulf. Please realize that this is NOT an essay or even a complete paragraph.  You are simply demonstrating, using two different qualities for Beowulf, that you can make a claim using an embedded quotation, and that you can follow up that claim/evidence with two sentences of commentary (interpretation, explanation, evaluation, further insight of one sort or another).
  • Second side, bottom--writing assignment due on Tuesday. You should get started over the week-end.  Many people finished today's work in class, and if you didn't, another 10 or 15 minutes should do it for sure.  So select a character and start looking for good support for each body paragraph.  To do this well, you will need to utilize both material in your textbook as well as the four hand-outs containing substantially more of the complete poem.
Last item--there will be a Beowulf quiz on Wednesday.  More details on Monday.  Your current homework (both today's and the short composition due on Tuesday) are the only things to focus on now.
