Two Strands of Work

Wrapping up the Grendel Essay
1) Anyone who was absent on Tuesday (or simply did not have a paper ready for the peer response) is responsible for turning in the shaping outline (most have done so), showing me your first draft for my personal "stamp," and getting someone to look over your paper for the formatting issues we focussed on yesterday.

2) ALL ESSAYS--whether you absent yesterday or not--are due tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 14.
  • The first draft (stamped and peer-edited for formatting) No draft/no points.
  • The revised draft --Obviously fix any problems noted in class, but be pro-active in looking at your writing with an eye toward improvement.  You can probably find a few better (more precise) vocabulary words, reduce the number of "to be verbs" or get rid of some "wordiness," smooth out some awkward structures, make SURE you don't have run-ons or fragments, and proofread for other punctuation or grammatical errors.
  • Submit to turnitin.com  -- the folder is already open.  It closes at 11:59 p.m. Thursday night, but why wait?  When you finish revising, submit it!
Chaucer's Prologue
The in-class worksheet wasn't for "points," it was to make sure you were tracking the set-up of Chaucer's "frame story."  Keep it.
In 4th period, we finished a close look at the Knight; in 6th, we didn't quite make it.  But you get the point, I hope,  that readers need to pay attention to the descriptions both for the details they state up-front as well as the overall impression and "between the lines" message the narrator is giving.

Use the questions at the bottom of the hand-out to take notes on the next five characters:  the Squire, the Yeoman, the Nun, the Monk, and the Friar.
