Ballad Assessment for Tomorrow!

TODAY IN CLASS
New concept:  Pastoral, particularly pastoral poetry
Two poems:  Marlowe's "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" and Sir Walter Raleigh's "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd"

In addition to noting the features of pastoral poetry, we used these poems to establish several other things. We looked at the idealized vs. realistic view of the world, noted the difference between "poet" and "speaker" (not necessarily evident in Marlowe's poem--the idea pretty much matches his personality--but hugely important for Raleight's response, since he is a male poet writing int the persona of a young woman).  Regardless of what we know or think we know about a poet and his or her own ideas, ALWAYS make the distinction between the poet and the speaker of a particular poem.

We used the black book for these, but they are in your own gray book.  If you were absent today, read them there, together with info on the term pastoral:  p. 244-245.

HOMEWORK
As noted above.  Finish the Ballad Assessment by doing questions II and III from yesterday's hand-outs. Follow all instructions there.
