TODAY IN CLASS
Collected (both classes):  last night's homework, Part I of the Renaissance unit introduction

4th period:  completed the paired paraphrase of Shakespeare's Sonnet 29,
6th period:  had time to finish that in class on Monday

But in BOTH classes, we talked generally about the "summary" version of the sonnet vs. a careful paraphrase, and linked the TONE of the poem to the structure.  There was a clear shift in mood at line 9, and the reason for that is captured best in the "closing couplet"--the last two lines.

Then, also in both classes, we read and discussed Sonnet 73 (check the table of contents--I don't have a book handy).  The key there is that the quatrain structure matches the content of the sonnet:  there is one major image per quatrain, with a closing couplet that provides the "so what."  I'm not providing the details of the images or the conclusion, because if you were absent, you need to work this out on your own.  (And if you were in class, you already know.)

In 6th, we used the extra time to look at a sonnet by John Donne, Holy Sonnet X--"Death Be Not Proud."

FOR TOMORROW
One more worksheet, finishing out the unit intro material with focus on the literature.  It's front and back, like the last one, but it's shorter:
