New short poetry unit: ballads, 2-3 Renaissance lyric poems, and 2-3 sonnets
We used the black book to get started today. If you were absent, you'll need to catch up with pp. 102-103 for ballad background and then read two other ballads:
- "Get Up and Bar the Door"--unusual as a ballad because it's comic. (pp. 108-109 in the black book, but this is in the grey book, too)
- "Sir Patrick Spens"--provided in both late Middle English and Modern English versions (pp 104/106 and pp. 105/107).
Read two more ballads from your grey book, and bring that book to class with you tomorrow!
"Lord Randall" (p. 195)
"Barbara Allan" (pp. 199-200)
For both of these, you should know the story line of the narrative (what happens?), what additional information seems to be missing or unclear, and how these ballads do/do not support the general expectations of a ballad according to what you read today.
