Monday--the Week before Second Winter Break

Not that we seem to be having any winter . . .

HOMEWORK FOR TUESDAY
Let me start there.  You need to read four pages from the gray lit book; the questions on the following hand-out are all from pp. 224-227.  If you were not in class today, here is the link to the hand-out

You need to be concise, but be as accurate as you can.  In 4th we added a bit of extra material from the black book--in 6th we'll do that on Tuesday.  It does not affect what you need to do from the gray book.

TODAY IN CLASS
There was some variation because of which activity put first.  Everyone needs to make sure you understand the difference between a paraphrase and a summary.

Since today's work was to paraphrase, here is what you need to know:
  • Keep the same point of view as the original passage or poem.  If it says "I" or "My," keep that first-person pronoun.  Don't switch to he, the speaker, Shakespeare, or anything else
  • Account for every idea in the original--don't just hit the highlights.  Find a way to "translate" from the more difficult language in the original passage to something that seems more clear and accessible in Modern English, but still conveys the same thoughts.
In 4th:  I returned the NPT work first and commented more fully on it; as a result, you were able to start but not complete the paired work on paraphrasing Shakespeare's Sonnet 29 (p. 255 in the black book).  You barely had 10 minutes to work; you will get 10-12 more minutes tomorrow.

In 6th:  I intended to give only 20 minutes, but I let you have a few extra minutes. Some people might not have finished, but the vast majority did (message to those who did not:  work faster, esp. if it is a "work more/chat less" situation).
