TODAY IN CLASS
Transition to the new unit: the Anglo-Saxon period. I went over some generalities, including the importance of historical and cultural information as part of the study of literature for both the Anglo-Saxon and Medieval periods.
Just to clarify: one could make a strong case that literary history is ALWAYS connected to the broader historical context, and the study of all literary works should include this background. But normally we have enough to do just focussing on the "English class" side of things. However, since high school seniors know relatively little about British history from its beginnings to the Renaissance, we emphasize this more heavily in senior English than you're probably accustomed to.
HOMEWORK
Merely two pages: 4 and 5 in your textbook. I'll be giving you a hand-out soon that covers the somewhat scattered background reading for the whole of this unit, but for this week, just "follow along." Reading the (somewhat skimpy) background in the book is important so that you'll have a better framework for tomorrow's note-taking activity.
