TODAY IN CLASS
Once we got to 1984, the focus was setting the scene using details from the first chapter regarding Winston's living conditions, the nature of the telescreen, and the significance of his very name. For tomorrow--still from the first short chapter--be very sure to know the "slogans" of the party and the names and functions of the major ministries. We'll talk about language issues related to these.
FOR TOMORROW
Read the next two short chapters (II and III). I'm not using page numbers because I do not have copies of your books. Just know that 1984 is divided into three large chunks, each one about one-third of the book. (Actually, the second part is extra long and the third part is extra short.) Within each big part are a varied number of chapters.
Part One needs to be finished by the start of class on Tuesday. We will have some in-class reading time on Friday, and you should divide the rest of Part One between the week-end and Monday night however you see fit.
