SO TODAY--
Yes, we talked about a few quick things--
- correcting the impression of time (Winston did NOT know whether 8:30 on the old-fashioned clock had really been "twenty-thirty" as he originally thought)
- examining the amazing ability of the speaker and everyone else in the square to accept the shift in enemy/alliances and move on (even calling the now-erroneous signs proof of "sabotage")
- noticing Winston's calm feeling that he was sane, and that sanity was possible even if you were a minority of one, to go with yesterday's discussion of feeling confident in HOW the proles provided hope for the future
SCHEDULE--Book finished by the start of class on Monday
Monday-Tuesday Complete our discussion of Part III as well as some "whole book" issues
Wednesday Counselor Visit for graduation-related issues
Thursday TEST over 1984 (All writing: an ID section plus more extended writing)
Friday Background assignment for Frankenstein (assembly schedule due to taping)
Monday Frankenstein first assignment (hand-out of text)
Tuesday RETURN 1984; RECEIVE Frankenstein; continue reading . . .
Our work with Frankenstein will settle into a pattern of about two days of reading (in-class time) followed by one full day of discussion. Fast readers will need to bring other work to stay quiet and focussed; exceptionally slow readers will need to do a fair amount of reading at home; average readers will get most of the reading done in class but can expect occasional reading homework. There will be one or two short quizzes, and possibly a short (2-3 page) paper with about a 3-day range--NOT a "major paper."
FINAL EXAM
Objective only. One section will be on 1984, but the longer section will be on Frankenstein. There will be no major test on Frankenstein alone--it will simply be rolled into the final.
