Online reading plus a writing assignment

Fourth, you will hear about this tomorrow, but if you see this tonight you might as well read it now. I found the article right after you left the room on Thursday.

Assignment Due on Monday--Current events reading plus a few brief questions.
1) Read the following article:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37256799/ns/technology_and_science-science/

2) Consider electricity in Frankenstein:
a)  Explain what Mary Shelley was referring to when she mentioned Darwin (the grandfather of his better-known grandson Charles Darwin), galvanisim, and vermicelli.  Google and then summarize in your own words.  (See p. xxiv of the Author's Introduction as well as the first paragraph of the Preface on p. xxvii.)
b) Study the paragraph in which the tree was blasted by lightning.  How does Frankenstein see electricity at this point?  How does this view connect with what Darwin was working on?
c) How accurate is the article in explaining what gives "life" to the creature?  Explain.  Compare with the first paragraph of Chapter 5?

3) Now read this article:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37238942/ns/health-health_care/

Write a short paragraph in which you agree or disagree with the author's point of view, providing support for your opinion.  (If you agree, come up with further evidence on your own--don't just say you agree with what he said!)

MAIN READING
4th--you will have some reading time tomorrow, but hopefully you will be finished with 4-6 by tonight. That way you can focus on 7-9 in class and have very little reading to do over the week-end.

6th--definitely be finished with 4-6 tonight . . . which was actually supposed to be finished by today.  You need to read 7-9 by Monday.  Be sure to bring your book tomorrow in case we have lousy weather.
