We worked on thematic statements in class, and I hope we will have time for some final thoughts on that tomorrow.
Look up the fullest definition and additional detail, and know examples from the book, for the following terms: ownlife, crimestop, blackwhite, doublethink, duckspeak. Be sure to locate the 3-4 page section of terminology in Chapter 9, in Goldstein's book.
I may add another one or two tomorrow, but the ID items will also include some other elements I'm not telling you in advance. Expect minor characters, place names, random items of significance, or possibly even a key quotation or two. Again, I might give you a few more possibilities, but I would not count on it.
Go over the material on the Part I quiz. It should be much easier now, but if it isn't, you know what you need to investigate on your own. Here is the link to that quiz:

Some wrong answers were due to careless reading or listening. Right at the beginning, for example, I had warned you that only the three paradoxical statements were "slogans" of the party. The "Big Brother is watching you" was really meant as a warning--it was not a party slogan. Also, what Winston actually wrote in his diary IN BETWEEN the date and "Down with Big Brother" was a mystery to some of you; look it up.
And for a challenge for something that was NOT on the quiz, but we should have looked at more closely, study the entire conversation between the old prole in the bar and Winston. Be able to identify the sorts of information the old man really conveyed about life before the Revolution. We passed over it too quickly in class.
If you do these things tonight, you will be ready to do some further preparation tomorrow night.
