1) The Prentice-Hall English textbook was checked out to everyone today. We began our first short story, "The Demon Lover" by Elizabeth Bowen (p. 1032-1038).
- We noted the basic ambiguity of the title--that it might refer to someone who loved a demon, or that a lover was in fact demonic, either literally or metaphorically.
- We began reading the story in class, mentioning some of the early details that added to the "eerie" mood.
3) HOMEWORK FOR FRIDAY:
I returned the first draft of the Self-Definition papers today, and I gave instructions for revision. Some of you have some significant changes to make, which I indicated on the paper or which we talked about briefly. ALL of you can no doubt improve your writing (word choice, style, mechanics, general "interest-level") with a revision, but I did not make specific suggestions on individual papers.
There are also specific formatting requirements for your final draft:
- Center your name at the top, creatively enhanced as you wish
- Center the separate titles for each section. These titles must be relevant to the content of each part, and hopefully somewhat creative and lively. Unacceptable: Part 1 and Part 2.
- Double-space throughout.
- Use a 12-point font of your choice, reasonably standard but not necessarily Times New Roman. Pick a font that helps to "define" you!
- Word Count--done separately for each section. Must be in the 200-250 range. (This was on the edge of the screen for 6th period, and I forgot to mention it. But it's here now, and I'll be sure to say something in class on Thursday.)
Again, this revision is due on FRIDAY, Sept. 11.
