The College Application Essay/Senior Personal Essay
We went over the hand-outs, and you should be getting started. Some of you were confused about the bottom line: EVERYONE needs to have a first draft of a personal essay of 500-650 words with you in class next Thursday, Sept. 24. You can choose from six Common Application topics or two University of Washington topics. But I can't stress enough that you need to clear your topic with me if it's anything other than what we went over today (or even if it's #6 on the Common App--the "topic of your choice" option). There are a variety of schools that some of you are applying to that DO require one several written responses that do not really allow the same kind of evaluation as a cohesive "essay" does. Don't assume that just because you need to write something for a specific school, it qualifies as a personal essay.
TOMORROW IN CLASS
We will get started on the next short story, and you will have most of the class period to read it and do some reader-response writing. BRING YOUR BOOK!
