We reviewed some of the early "eerie" elements of Elizabeth Bowen's "The Demon Lover, talked about the rest of the story, and then students wrote for 15 minutes taking sides--and supporting!!--their view of whether or not it was a genuine ghost story. I'll attach the exact topic at the end of the post, so if you were absent, you can get it made up over the week-end as an out-of-class assignment.

We discussed potential ambiguity in “The Demon Lover.” Choose ONE of the two positions listed below, and defend your interpretation using as many references to the story as possible.
- The author wants us to assume that the supernatural presence in the story is an actual ghost. (Provide convincing details that will support your position.)
- Although there are supernatural details in the story, there is no ghost. (In your paragraph, provide the alternative explanation for as many of these details as you can.)
