TODAY IN CLASS
There was a short reading check quiz over the Graham Greene story "A Shocking Accident." We went over it as part of talking about the story, and also tried to look at possible themes for this somewhat light story.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFO
I extended the deadlines for getting the self-definition and first draft of the personal essay onto turnitin.com. Please try to get this done over the week-end, so there will be just a few people to check with next week.
Second Draft of Personal Essay:
1) Have typed second draft in class with you on Wednesday--peer response plus handed in.
2) Also bring the stamped first draft and peer response sheet --will also be handed in.
3) Submit 2nd draft to turnitin.com--no later than 11:59 p.m. Wednesday night.
Test Preparation
Although the unit test for short fiction is at least a week away, I alerted students to the literary terms that will be on the test as well as the list of stories you'll be responsible for. Here's the info from the overhead:
Basic Literary Terms
We have been using most of these throughout our discussions of this literature, and you have known most of these terms pretty much “forever.” But now is the time to be sure: look these up in the “Literary Terms Handbook” at the back of the Prentice-Hall text (blue stripe at the top of this section). These are the terms that you should know specifically with reference to the elements of fiction:
ambiguity modernism short story
character/characterization narration style epiphany
conflict plot symbol (see Sept. 18 blog)
dialogue point of view theme
fiction setting tone

You are expected to know the author of each story, but I’m not going to quiz you over aspects of their personal background. .
