IN CLASS TODAY
I hope you took good notes, because students really pitched in to help discuss some of the language features of James Joyce's "Araby." We set up a series of "romance" words (related to medieval romances of quests, etc.) as well as language denoting aspects of worship or religion (somewhat broadly interpreted). Someone pointed out during 6th period that these sometimes merge together: Yes. For the young narrator of this story, the object of worship has become the girl, and his quest appears to be to attain her love and devotion in return.
In 6th I checked to make sure you had your 3 questions, and after small groups had a chance to answer the "easy" ones, we used others to get discussion going. In 4th I forgot, but don't count on that in the future. I may check on Wednesday, or I may just make sure to look at something else later in the week.
HOMEWORK
Nothing new for tomorrow. However, if today's discussion suggests that you didn't read the story with care, you've got a second opportunity!
Enjoy sleep-late Wednesday.
